Re-Work - Product Recall - Salvage

REAL LIFE STORY

A major beverage manufacturer mislabeled a product and mistakenly shipped it to us for variety packing and club store distribution. ActionPak's attention to detail recognized the problem, assessed and corrected the situation before the product was distributed. This action prevented a major recall.

It is this type of quality work which affords good business and prevents costly errors.

I would like to take this opportunity to comment on the fine service provided by you and the ActionPak production team over the course of the past year. Like Nantucket Nectars, ActionPak is committed to quality. With your help, we have been able to meet our specialty packaging needs.

Quality Control:
ActionPak
complies with military, government, and commercial standards. Our quality manuals have been written to meet Mil-I-45208, Mil-Std-9858 (for packaging) and Mil-Std-105 for sampling. These rigid standards meet or exceed ISO requirements. We even have a resident government inspector stationed at our facility.

Change Orders:
Don't forget to keep us in the loop, we'd prefer e mail or a fax.

Corrective Actions:
Mistakes are part of business. No one's perfect. We look at errors as opportunities to improve our process.

Cleanliness and FDA Registration:
The entire building is pest controlled. Food grade areas comply with our written GMP manual. From the truck to the front office, we're constantly cleaning. We employ two people that do nothing but sweep. Our manuals are available for your on site review. FDA registration has been obtained for specific project management.

Inspections:
We perform partial or complete 100% inspections. Whether its bad components, missing parts, mixed lot codes, the wrong flavors in a variety pack or looking for damaged product, whatever your criteria, we can get it done quickly.

Re-Work & Salvage:
ActionPak performs many re-work and salvage jobs. A re-work order is a manufacturing order that needs to be picked out from others, especially something rejected because of inferior quality or damage to transportation. There are many instances when product is originally shipped from a far distance, the load gets shifted on the road and we cull out the bad from the good at our facility or we can in-source & re-work the job directly at your customer.

Product Recall:
Is a request to return to the maker a batch or an entire production run of a product, usually due to the discovery of safety issues. The recall is an effort to limit liability for corporate negligence (which can cause costly legal penalties) and to improve or avoid damage to publicity. Recalls are costly to a company because they often entail replacing the recalled product or paying for damages caused in use, albeit possibly less costly than indirect cost following damages to brand name and reduced trust in the manufacturer.

A product recall usually involves the following steps, which may differ according to local laws:

  • Maker or dealer notifies the authorities responsible of their intention to recall a product. Consumer hotlines or other communication channels are established. The scope of the recall, that is, which serial numbers or batch numbers etc. are recalled, is often specified.
  • Product recall announcements are released on the respective government agency's website (if applicable), as well as in paid notices in the metropolitan daily newspapers. In some circumstances, heightened publicity will also result in news television reports advising of the recall.
  • When a consumer group learns of a recall it will also notify the public by various means.
  • Typically, the consumer is advised to return the goods, regardless of condition, to the seller for a full refund or modification.

Commonly Recalled Products:

  • Things causing harm or danger
  • Other defects diminishing functionality
  • Inadequate documentation (typically requires just re-shipment of documentation rather than a recall)

What are the main areas related to Product Recalls?

There are three main categories designated for defective products, which may result in recalls:

  • Design Defects – Flaws in the item’s conceptual design.
  • Manufacturing Defects – Specific defects which occur during the manufacture of the product.
  • Defects in Marketing – Improper instructions or failures to make clear to consumers of potential & hidden dangers in the product.

ActionPak has experience in initiating a product recall and we have also performed test recalls in the event a recall should occur.
